I’m going to give it all I got to end a 40 year addiction to tobacco.
I know my friends will be keeping their fingers crossed. My enemies unfortunately were rooting for the Grim Reaper.

You can do it Dan!! Its a pain in the arse to quit (trust me!!!) But take 1 day at a time. Chew on stir sticks, that helped me!
Stop smoking is a personal thing. Remember nobody likes a quitter so down the line don’t be one of those folks that complain about cigarette smoking.
What works for me when I quit is to always have a pack of smokes around. I know what your going to say but it works. By having a pack of smokes around I don’t have that feeling that IM OUT of smokes.
Now when I have the desire to smoke I smoke a cigarette without lighting it. I found I more like to have something in my hand. You can also smell the unburnt cigarette if you like and it will smell like it never has before since your nose is working better now.
After about a week I switch to smoking a cigar with out lighting it. I can smoke a cigar like this for 3 days till the end is slobbered off.
At this point IM about ready to stop putting things in my mouth and I start calculating how many cigs I have not smoked. A 2 pack a day smoker will save his lungs 1240 cigarettes a month or about 14800 a year.
Just think about all the money you will save.
Good job, Dan! Try not to get too edgy or uptight! That nicotine addiction is a tough one. I’m not too sure about slobbering on a cigar for days though. Maybe get a dog chew or something?
Dan, I quit after 30+ years of smoking, some points:
1. It took 20+ attempts before I finally quit.
2. Don’t quit, just promise yourself that you are just stopping until you reach 70, then you can start again. (too agonizing to cut off an old friend)
3. ONE CIGARETTE WILL HURT, you most likely will fall back into the old habit
4. Don’t be hard on yourself, smoking is more addicting than heroin.
5. Put the money you would have spent on cigarettes into a jar on top of the fridge, make a goal of saving it for something you want for yourself.
IN ABOUT 3 DAYS THE CRAVING SHOULD LESSEN, AFTER ABOUT 2 WEEKS YOU WILL FEEL A LOT BETTER, BUT YOU MUST AVOID CIGARETTES/SMOKE FOR QUITE A WHILE.
IT’S TOUGH TO QUIT, BUT YOU CAN DO IT. GOOD LUCK
Thanks Glenn… I believe this time I am ready to quit…. I agree staying away from others who smoke will be a great help….. No hanging at the circle K for sure.
Especially, no hanging at the Circle K around 3 a.m.!
I quit using this herbal stuff called “Smoke Away” it had pills and aroma therapy, I did not use the aroma much, the pills supposedly take away the cravings. It was supposed to take a week, but I think I mis-read the instructions and stopped smoking completely on the first day and never looked back.
I had been smoking regularly a pack a day since I was a mid-teen, I’m 43 now and haven’t touched a cigarette in over 10 years.
Good luck I will be praying for you, Fay is quitting also right?
Ken you should try too, if anything for the money you will save.
Just think everyone that quits takes extortion money away from the state.
Hi Dan and Fay,
I quit two years ago this coming april 20th. I took Chantix and it worked really well. I know that it does not work for everyone.
As for the money saved -- it is really amazing. To think that laura and I were on the average spending $18.00 a day or $540.00 or so a month -- Yikes!
You can do it. I too have never looked back and I also socialize with people who smoke and it does not bother me at all.
Anyway -- good luck to both of you.
P.S.
The first 14 days are the worst. Body still wants that nocotine. But after 14 days your body could care less about the nicotine -- but it is then your mind telling you what you want. Just make sure your mind says “NO MORE CIGARETTES”.
It wasn’t too bad until about 7:00 pm…. Talk about Jones’n…. Got thru it.
Day Two begins…. so far so good.
Keep busy!!!!!! Do something!!!
Hang in there!!!!!!
Chew gum not food!!!!
Day 3 Begins: Did you every notice that your dogs breath is kickin’? OMG. I think I need to get some Doggy Listerine.
Woke up wanted to ….. no no make that needed to, eat the fridge.
Day 4: Woke up at 4:00 AM Jones’zin… Drank 3 cups of Coffee, eat a hand full of jelly beans and soon the urge passed.
I’m afraid I might need to kill a baby rabbit or something….
Jesus everything has a smell…. some’z not so good either.
You no longer smoke so don’t even think about the urge. Screw the urge. The urge will soon be history. The real Dan will then emerge.
The new Dan with a clear head.
Day 5: Good God, I had no idea the world smelled like that.
Here’s what does work -- from the first moment, with no pain. You’ll like it more than smoking.
