On Thursday February 25, 2010, civilian environmental personnel were conducting game and environmental surveys on the Fort Irwin Army Base. They discovered bone fragments that were consistent with human skeletal remains.
The Fort Irwin Police and Army Criminal Investigation Division contacted the Barstow Sheriff’s Station. Barstow detectives requested the assistance of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Homicide Detail and Coroner’s Division.
A further search of the area yielded additional remains that are believed to be human. The remains were recovered and an autopsy is pending.
