Red herring1 300x300 Smells Fishy To Me (Repost)It appears that Gary Daigneault just does not understand exactly what was trying to be accomplished at the Council meeting he references today in his story of Mr. Steve Brown.

Daigneault seems to think that Brown is somehow in the wrong by some convoluted thought process because the CDVA is not a current non-profit and therefore should not have been able to even offer to run the Visitor Center for the city of 29 Palms.

The question of any organization being a non-profit was never an issue.

This non-profit status carries as much weight as the Chamber’s failure to maintain its corporate status within the State of California – none! Because, as I recall, the Chamber’s failure to do a very simple task, keeping its corporate status current was deemed minor by it and therefore held no importance.

The issue of the Chamber being awarded, again, a no-bid contract, is the question. The question is not if the Chamber is a non-profit or even if it has a valid corporate status.

What we have here is an attempt by one man (Daigneault) to attack another man (Brown) who by the way has done much good for our city. This attack is an attempt to draw the pressure away from the Chamber being given preferential treatment.

To this day no one can provide the people of this city, with a logical answer, as to why the services of running a Visitor Center for the city should not have been put out to bid.

There were and are no requirements that a non-profit must run the Visitor Center.

Perhaps volunteers could have run it, perhaps the Fraternal Order of Eagles could have run it, perhaps the Knights of Columbus could have run it, and perhaps any Tom, Dick, or Harry could have run it. The issue is that we as tax payers have no clue if anyone other than the Chamber could have run it, wanted to run it, and could have run it cheaper and better.

A Red Herring is a very little fish that draws attention away from real issues. Mr. Daigneault is offering a Red Herring here that does not pass the smell test.

Of further importance is what Daigneault now seems to think about a city building. I quote this recent news as issued by the Chamber:

“The move is a temporary one in that the Chamber of Commerce will be moving again in about 4 months into the new Twentynine Palms Visitors Center Building next to Bucklin Park. The building, 73484 Twentynine Palms Highway, owned by the city of Twentynine Palms, is being refurbished and will eventually become the Chamber’s new permanent home sometime in the spring of 2010.”

As a Counclimember I will be sure to ask at the next Council meeting if I missed something in regards to the Chamber making this new city building its “permanent home”.

Surely he jests?
