Needles, CA– On September 9, 2011, at approximately 9:38 p.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department/Needles Police Department was notified that Andrew Nicholas Deshane a 16 year old male a resident of Needles had jumped off the Needles bridge, also known as the K Street bridge, and had not surfaced.
Deputies immediately launched two sheriff’s boats and began searching the river while patrol deputies in vehicles searched the shore area. Deputies learned through investigation the victim, along with 3 other juveniles, jumped off the bridge into the river. Three juveniles swam to the shore, but the victim had difficulty swimming and did not reach the shore.
Members from the Sheriff’s Dive Team responded and began searching underwater with the Sheriff’s Marine Enforcement Unit from above the water. The Colorado River Station Search and Rescue unit searched the river’s shoreline on foot.
On September 10, 2011, at approximately 9:42 a.m., searchers located the victim deceased on the river bottom. Investigators believe the victim drowned and foul play is not suspected at this time. The Coroner’s Division is investigating the exact cause of death.
